What Is GYLON® Gasket Material?

GYLON® is a family of high-performance PTFE-based gasket materials developed for demanding industrial sealing applications. While conventional PTFE offers excellent chemical resistance, it can experience creep and cold flow under load. GYLON® materials are engineered to provide improved dimensional stability while maintaining many of the chemical-resistant properties that make PTFE valuable in industrial sealing applications.

Different GYLON® grades use specific fillers and constructions to provide performance characteristics suited for different process conditions. This allows engineers and maintenance professionals to select a material based on factors such as chemical compatibility, temperature, pressure and flange requirements rather than relying on a single PTFE material for every application.

Find the Right GYLON® Gasket Material

M&P Sealing offers a range of GYLON® materials for industrial sealing applications. Compare available grades below or select a material to learn more about its properties and applications.

How Do I Choose the Right GYLON® Material?

There is no single GYLON® grade that is ideal for every sealing application. Material selection should be based on the specific operating conditions of the equipment and process. Important factors to consider include:

Process Media & Chemical Compatibility
The gasket material must be compatible with the chemicals, gases or fluids it will contact during service.

Operating Temperature
Temperature requirements can affect which GYLON® formulation is appropriate for an application.

System Pressure
Operating and design pressures should be considered when selecting both the gasket material and gasket configuration.

Flange Type & Condition
Flange design, surface finish and overall condition can influence gasket performance.

Gasket Thickness
Selecting the appropriate gasket thickness can affect compressibility, sealing stress and overall performance.

Available Bolt Load
Proper gasket seating requires sufficient compressive load from the bolted flange connection.

Application Requirements
Industry requirements, equipment design, process conditions and maintenance practices can all influence material selection.

If you’re unsure which GYLON® grade is right for your application, M&P Sealing can help evaluate your sealing requirements and identify an appropriate material.

Industries & Applications for GYLON® Gaskets

GYLON® gasket materials are used across industries where reliable sealing and chemical resistance are essential.

Common industries and applications include:

  • Chemical processing
  • Petrochemical processing
  • Oil and gas
  • Refining
  • Power generation
  • Pulp and paper
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Pharmaceutical processing
  • Water and wastewater treatment
  • Industrial piping systems
  • Process vessels
  • Pumps and valves
  • Heat exchangers
  • General industrial manufacturing

Because operating conditions vary significantly between applications, material compatibility and service conditions should always be evaluated when selecting a gasket material.

Why Choose GYLON® Gaskets?

Industrial sealing systems often require more than basic chemical resistance. Gasket materials must maintain sealing stress, withstand process conditions and provide reliable performance over time. GYLON® materials are engineered to address these challenges while retaining the advantages associated with PTFE-based sealing materials.

Excellent Chemical Resistance

GYLON® materials are available for use with a broad range of aggressive chemicals and process media, making them well suited for demanding chemical and industrial environments.

Reduced Creep & Cold Flow

GYLON® materials are engineered to provide improved dimensional stability compared with conventional PTFE, helping the gasket maintain its shape and sealing load during service.

Reliable Sealing Performance

Improved material stability can help maintain gasket stress and support reliable flange sealing across demanding operating conditions.

Multiple Material Grades

The GYLON® family includes multiple formulations and constructions, allowing gasket selection to be tailored to specific chemicals, temperatures, pressures and equipment requirements.

Custom Fabrication

GYLON® materials can be fabricated into custom gasket shapes and sizes to accommodate standard flanges, specialty equipment and unique industrial sealing requirements.

GYLON® vs. Standard PTFE Gaskets

Both GYLON® and conventional PTFE gasket materials can provide excellent chemical resistance, but their performance characteristics are not identical. Standard PTFE is valued for its broad chemical resistance and low friction characteristics. However, conventional PTFE can be susceptible to creep and cold flow when subjected to sustained compressive loads.

GYLON® materials are engineered to improve dimensional stability and sealing performance while retaining the chemical-resistant characteristics associated with PTFE. Specialized fillers and manufacturing processes allow different GYLON® grades to be optimized for specific industrial sealing conditions.

For applications involving demanding process conditions, aggressive chemicals or concerns about gasket creep, an engineered GYLON® material may provide advantages over conventional PTFE.
