How to Select the Right Gasket?

Selecting the right gasket is critical to achieving a reliable, long-term seal. The correct choice depends on a combination of operating conditions, media compatibility, and flange design. Choosing the wrong material or configuration can lead to leakage, equipment damage, safety risks, and costly downtime. At M&P Sealing, we help customers match the right gasket material and design to their specific application—ensuring performance in even the most demanding environments.

Key Factors to Consider

Operating Temperature

Temperature plays a major role in material selection.

  • High temperatures: Graphite or metal-reinforced gaskets
  • Moderate temperatures: CNA or elastomer materials
  • Extreme heat + chemicals: FFKM or specialty materials

Internal Pressure

Pressure determines the type of gasket construction required.

  • High-pressure systems: Spiral wound or reinforced gaskets
  • Low-pressure systems: Elastomer or ePTFE gaskets

Media (Chemical Compatibility)

The fluid or gas being sealed must be compatible with the gasket material.

  • Aggressive chemicals: PTFE or FFKM
  • Oils and fuels: Viton® or Buna-N
  • Water and steam: EPDM

Incorrect material selection can lead to rapid degradation and seal failure.

Flange Type & Surface Condition

Flange design and condition directly impact sealing performance.

  • Raised face flanges: Standard ring gaskets
  • Full-face flanges: Full-face gaskets for even load distribution
  • Damaged or uneven flanges: ePTFE or soft, conformable materials

Gasket FAQs

A gasket is used to create a seal between two mating surfaces, preventing the leakage of fluids or gases under pressure. Gaskets are commonly used in flanges, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers to ensure safe and reliable operation in industrial systems.

Gaskets are manufactured from a variety of materials depending on the application, including PTFE, graphite, rubber (such as Nitrile, EPDM, and Viton®), and compressed non-asbestos fiber (CNA). High-performance materials like Garlock® gasket materials and FFKM compounds such as Kalrez® and Chemraz® are also used for demanding chemical and high-temperature environments.

A gasket is typically used between two stationary surfaces, such as flanges, to prevent leakage. A seal, such as an O-ring or mechanical seal, is often used in dynamic applications where there is movement between components. Both serve to contain fluids or gases, but they are designed for different operating conditions.

Choosing the right gasket material depends on several factors, including operating temperature, pressure, chemical exposure, and flange design. Selecting the wrong material can lead to leaks or premature failure, so it’s important to evaluate all application conditions. M&P Sealing works closely with customers to recommend materials that provide reliable, long-term sealing performance.
